WordPress.COM – NEW Block Editor – My First Attempt and Thoughts

Today, I thought I would finally play around with Gutenberg the New Editor by WordPress.com. Additionally, I hear the classic editor will be discontinued in 2020, so I better get learning it now, and I thought you might find it interesting too.

What better way of showing you what it can do by making this post, demonstrate some of the cool things you can do with it.

Oh by the way, my learning style can be described as winging it. The days of me reading how to use something before using it when out the door in my late twenties a few decades ago…lol…I just go for it now.

Block Editor – aka Gutenberg.

Firstly, I had no clue it was called Gutenberg, I learnt that from Hugh’s blog.

Gutenberg, allows you to create blocks as Heading, paragraphs and images. But, for me the most exciting tools are the ability to create columns and Drop capitals. Also, you can create reusable blocks which I assume you can use on different blog posts. Also, you can move blocks up and down. Oooh So much fun.

Below is a demo of 2 columns, and 3 different text paragraphs, with drop capital and a bit of colour to jazz it up a bit. Note, if you look at this in the reader you will not see the columns in their full glory, but if you visit my site it will (now that is a bit annoying for wp.users), and these 2 columns aren’t visible on my Samsung mobile – also annoying πŸ˜”πŸ˜‚.

All the amazing editing options with ….

WordPress New Editor Called Gutenberg.

Read more about Gutenberg at Hughs Views and News blogΒ  who describes it much better than I do and has links to other blogs who demo how to use the block editor as well.

Within a block you can use the classic editor, which I did to created the pingback/linkback to Hughs blog and then converted it back to a block. I only did this way as I could not figure out an easier way. This is only my first attempt.

IMAGES: To resize images is much easier, as the images has handles that move to make the image bigger or smaller. I like this because it a like using word and images in word.

You can also add links to facebook, twitter, Instagram and youtube etc posts and more by using Embed block.

I conclude, based on my first attempt all of 120 mins, the blocks functionality is a bit fiddly. In some places it is not intuitive for a person like me who just wants to dives right into using it. However, it is not impossible to get used to and it allows you to do some cool stuff quite easily especially if you don’t want to learn how write HTML like me. My attempt was a total fly by the seat of my pants attempt and I got the hang of it. But, in Hughs blog post, he gives more details and two links to two very useful post that are worth reading, as there is only so far you can go without reading instructions.

Thank you for popping by, please like, comment , share, like.

Did you find this post useful? Are you using the block editor, what are your thoughts, do comment below? Do you know how to embed facebook if so can you comment below? As I learn more do you want me to blog on how to do xyz with the block editor?

We should always move out of our comfort zones even if it forced- lol. I would like to give thanks to Hugh’s blog post that kicked me into action. Hugh, said something very important on his post, that is, we should use it and if we find any bugs we should report them to word press so they can make the block tool more friendly and bug free as in 2020 we won’t be able to use the classic editor

  1. Wow, I’m so impressed with your first attempt at using Gotherberg. Well done for stepping outside of your comfort zone and giving it a go. You’ve even gone one step further than me in that you did some text columns – something I’ve yet to try.

The display on mobiles and tablets will be different depending on the system you are using. However, manufacturers are always sending updates to improve our viewing experience, so I think all of this will follow. In the meantime, enjoy using trying the new editor. I am sure it will go on to give your readers an even better reading experience.

Thanks so much for linking to my post about Gutenberg. I’m so glad it inspired you to give Gutenberg a try.

  2. I am usually so attached to the things that I am already used to and always have resistance to learning new tools πŸ™‚ Reading your post helped me know some of the features to become familiar for eventually if I am forced to use them.

That reminds me, that until very recently I had it in my to- do list to go back to your posts that you researched on mailchimp, etc. …and that is still on my to do list πŸ™‚ I know I will have to get to that some day soon …I am simply stretching time with lots of other stuff to do, until I cannot put it aside again.

    1. I totally understand as I didnt want to bother learing it. I can be quite last minute about stuff, but I generally figure it out. Today i just thought let me give it ago, and in doing so i have already posted a post when i said i would only post once a week only – lol. I thought about saving this post for next week, but i couldnt wait.. Reading Hughs post was the trigger for action. I did play around once before, but it wasnt a sincere effort.

It isnt that hard really to use. But do any thing flash with columns it doesnt translate to a mobile or reader and for me that was sad, cause it looks so lovely on my laptop..πŸ˜‚.

Anyway, it is quite easy so when you do try it wont be bad. Just give it time.

My blogging tips posts are still there. Mailing link to a youtube video. But they are still there.

I am excited about my official post that comes out tomorrow on my official schedule
      ..lol

Have a good nite. Speak later.
