Lata Mangeshkar – the Nightingale of India,
the most famous Bollywood Playback singer passed away Sunday 6th Feb 2022. Born 28 September 1929, she had just turned 92.
She sang for 7 and half decades or so. It is said that she has sung over 30,000 plus songs. In 1974, the Guinness Book of Records listed Lata Mangeshkar as the most recorded singer, stating that she had recorded “not less than 25,000 solo, duet and chorus backed songs in 20 Indian languages” between 1948 and 1974. However, the Guinness book of records removed this entry (* Source: Wikipedia ). There is much controversy about the volume of songs she has sung, and the number is not recorded anywhere it seems. Unless someone has the time and inclination to count and research them all, it is guesswork.
She started her singing career after the death of her father at the tender age of 13 (1942). She was the leadest of 4. She had two younger sisters and one younger brother. Her story is deeper than I know, but I plan to learn as much as I can and share it as I learn.
For the next few days or maybe the whole 2022, I might share a song of hers. And if I can find a translation for it I will surely share it. I can’t imagine working at 13 let alone 7 / 8 decades. She has sung so many songs.
Let’s Me Share A song of hers.
Today I want to share Jo Wada Kiya (Fulfill the promise that was made) one video is Lataji singing it live – you can see the translation here
The second video is from the movie that this song was written for – the film Taj Mahal – 1963.
The loss is irreplacable and no words are enough to convey the enormity of her contribution to our culture, country and the world of singing.

Agree there are no words to convey, or give thanks to her contribution. She was just amazing.

Lataji was an excellent singer and what an achievement she has had in her life. Today in honor of her death our Govt., declared a Holiday and they gave her a very good shradanjali. Nice of you Bella do keep her posts where she is singing so beautifully. We Indians and so many others will all miss her.
