Nonfiction November 2022 Week 2: Book Pairings!

Week 2 of Nonfiction November theme is – Book Pairings – hosted by Rennie @ What’s Nonfiction.

The Rules for Week 2

“This week, pair up a nonfiction book with a fiction title (or another nonfiction!). It can be a “If you loved this book, read this!” or just two titles that you think would go well together. Maybe it’s a historical novel and you’d like to get the real history by reading a nonfiction version of the story. Or pair a book with a podcast, film or documentary, TV show, etc. on the same topic or stories that pair together. “

Rennie @ What’s Nonfiction.

Here goes my entry…

I am going to compare The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and Becoming by Michelle Obama. Both books inspired me to be more than I was, to become more, and to see opportunities where on the face of it there seems none. Learn from what life offers you, though it may seem nothing, may seem hard and unfair, to see bigger than the normal societal views of success – achievements. To design your life regardless of your social status, to find beauty in what seems impossible and to have the courage to be you. Also, to let go of your dreams, by this I mean, sometimes we dream the wrong dream and life guide us to the right dream, the right path for us.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

A simple story/fable about self-discovery. An Andalusian shepherd boy who wants to travel the world in search of treasure.

His travels as a shepherd boy lead to a different kind of treasure that is more rewarding and satisfying than he would find in the physical treasures he wanted.

Santiago’s journey teaches us to learn with the flow of life, recognise the opportunity at the moment, read the omens

A book that inspires us to dream and see opportunitis.

Becoming – Michelle Obama

This memoir takes through Michelle’s life from childhood to becoming the first lady.

She speaks of what shaped her, what she learnt in life, and those who supported her. They were not rich, her father was ill, and they live on the South side of Chicago when ‘Blacks’ were not equal.

She talks of her studies, early jobs, meeting her husband, children and becoming first lady.

This book was utterly inspiring for me. It is a story of her discovery and becoming. A story of self-discovery that inspired anyone who reads it to become more than what we are today. Read my review of the book here

  1. That’s a good pairing! I really struggle with this week as I don’t read much historical fiction and that’s what people pair nonfiction with most, I think. But Rennie gave us lots of options, and I wrote my post during the year whenever I came across one!

    1. It is good to plan as the year goes a long. It is my first time joining in nonfiction November . Frankly I didn’t even know it existed. I am on a learning and experience curve.

      Fab to meet you Liz.

      Speak soon regards Bells

      1. It seems to be one that lots of people struggle with, myself included since I never have any fiction to link up. That’s why I tried to change it up a bit and give people more options to think about this year 🙂 Absolutely love your take on it!
