I want to ask you a few questions on blogging.  I ask because I can’t figure out the Answers.   I have tried so hard to find answers but nothing makes sense to me.  So to all the bloggers out there here my cry, please share your experiences, thoughts, wisdom , ups and down to help everyone learn from you.

  1. What is your main blogging goal?  To write as a hobbie, to make money, to do both, or just be creative?
  2. Is a mailing list necessary and why?
  3. Why should you go self hosted? What is the reason, the benefit the need?  But, if you are paying for your wordpress account do you need to be self hosted ?  Why?
  4. What is a sales funnel?
  5. How are you making money blogging?
  6. If you are making money, then what tax do you pay?  What about international tax? Are an employer , limited company or self employed ( these UK terminologies, i dont know for your country).
  7. Do you use affilated links and how does that work , and how does that get managed see question 6?
  8. How many hours do you spend blogging? Do you have a day job?
  9. How many blog post do you write a day?
  10. How many blog posts do you write a week?
  11. What do you think of social media marketing?  Is it working? Do you do it for free or paid?

  1. What is your main blogging goal? To write as a hobbie, to make money, to do both, or just be creative?
🦋 I do a bit of all that…;ess on the money side.
Is a mailing list necessary and why?
🦋 Depends on what you want “out there” and why it’s important to you.
Why should you go self hosted? What is the reason, the benefit the need? But, if you are paying for your wordpress account do you need to be self hosted ? Why?
🦋 I don’t know enough about this one to respond.
    What is a sales funnel?
    🦋 Don’t know.
How are you making money blogging?
🦋 I don’t. However, I do sell a few of my books when people use my
If you are making money, then what tax do you pay? What about international tax? Are an employer , limited company or self employed ( these UK terminologies, i dont know for your country).
🦋 I think you need to check the maximum income before it becomes a taxable income with your tax office. It’s possibe you are at a ‘hobby’ level so you don’t pay tax But again, check wth your tax office.
Do you use affilated links and how does that work , and how does that get managed see question 5?
🦋 I don’t have enough experience with this one to answer right now.
How many hours do you spend blogging? Do you have a day job?
🦋 No paid day job but I spend my blogging time around family commitments–which can be full on some weeks.
🦋 How many blog posts do you write a day?
Well, somestime none but I often work on a few at a time and schedule each post in advance for when I’m not online.
How many blog posts do you write a week?
    🦋 2 -3 but again, they’re usually scheduled ahead.
What do you think of social media marketing? Is it working? Do you do it for free or paid?
🦋 I wouldnt bother unless I wanted to make a comfortable income.
How much time do you spend on a blog post? How time of on social media? How much time connecting with other bloggers?
🦋 When scheduling a blog post, I can rechecked a week before and pre-view the day before it goes live. FB is for family and close friends so that will depend on activity. I connect with about 20 other bloggers every day/posts and then check blogs I follow on the weekend or ‘reading’ nights. But followers and blogs I follow can often be more important than blogging itself.

I enjoy writing. I write off line often and sometimes long hours but I may work on more article/blog post at a time.

I also enjoy reading so much of my spare time is devoted to reading other posts.

My suggestion is to work out what you really want out of your blogging,

    I hope that helps. 🙂

    • Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

I know i can get the tax question and business set up questions from the tax man.

At the moment my blogging is a hobby and i think will always be that.

I love my part time job and that pays right.

But, i guess i want to understand more of these things to understand can i be bothered, 2) can this lead to passive income. . But my issue is how and what to make money on. My blog is a hobby and i cant see or do i want to change that it is a labour of love and self development.

But i just want to figure out how it works for those who make money to see if i could..if i ever want too in the future. Right now i am happy with my life as it is. No need to rock the boat, but also one should plan for the future too.

      If that makes sense.

Again thanks for taking time to answe the quedtions. Appreciate your te and advise.

  2. I have an online business which has a blog attached. I also run 2 more blogs!
1 is a lot more fun than the other. Both are set up to create opportunity for monetisation, while giving value to the reader. Freedom2try.com, this account, was set up to share what we learned.
A mailing list is great for promoting new material, and for direct sales… if you have something to sell.
2 of my 3 sites are WordPress.org – 1 is blogspot. Check out the Business part of my blog where I have a piece on self hosting. There are many benefits to self hosting, but it can also be a challenge. Finding a good host is the main problem. (My most recent blog is blogspot… I’m sure I’ll get round to writing a post on why that is.)
Everyone has something to sell. My business sells real value… I don’t sell at my other 2 blogs. They are about sharing useful information in hope of building traffic.
Digital downloads/premium network ads for the business. Limited Adsense for the other 2 blogs.
Yes… we pay tax/eu tax just like any self employed person.
Yes re affiliates, but we don’t generate that much from this for whatever reason. So we focus on other things that work.
No day job – we work full time on our business/blogs.
Each blog/site has its own number for posts/content per period. From once a week to 1/2 a month.
    As above.
99% of our marketing is free. Social media works. It’s a matter of finding what works for you. Pinterest is by far the best. By far.
Zero other bloggers (unless this counts?) 10% maintenance 60-70% content creation 10-20% writing posts. 20% promotion/ social media.

    Done!

  3. 1) for me I started blogging as hobby and to keep myself busy!! With the grace of God have made good friends! As far as money making I think sometimes but can not give enough time which it requires! So I keep my purpose continued that is to enjoy blogging.
    2) about mailing list have not seen that portion much as have been reading less mails. Which I feel I need too start soon.
    8) I spend approximately 2 hours or so depending more too. For time being I am looking for job!! Try keeping myself busy in other activities too.
    9) number of post written a day is not fixed as I don’t want lose the quality of writing if I am not getting topics in my mind.
    10) no . Of posts published try to keep frequent.
    11) for me social media haven’t given me much positive response like Facebook or Instagram.
    12) I like spending more time in WordPress as I get to interact with the bloggers a lot with reciprocative response which I found more healthy and good than social media .

  4. I have no answers to any of these, except for why I blog which is: to express myself creatively while hoping to inspire or help others facing their own chronic illness. I originally was just going to journal, but my hand writing isn’t what it used to be because of my MS so a blog was born!

I would love to know how to possibly review products or something? I see all these beautiful blogs where bloggers are asked to review a product and I wouldn’t mind getting in on that action possibly.

As to how long does it take to write a post, it can take me up to 2 weeks working on one post because my MS dictates how long I can sit at the computer at a time, but it’s ok. I’m not working anymore and I have time on my hands to work at it when I am able!

I will be checking back to read the comments on your post, thanks for writing this one!

    • Dearest Raegan, thank you for reading and commenting. And it is fabulous the reason you blog. And honestly i blog to share meditations, positive thinking, and just life stuff and things i have seen benefit in and others may benefit from. And i love doing it. I personally dont want to stop doing this and i dont want to make money that way because it doesnt feel right , honest, fair and it just goes against the grain.

But at some point i do want to make money somehow.. but that where i draw a blank each time and then decide to forget about and just focus on my blog and enjoying that because it is enjoyed by a few blogger and i dont want to spoil that. It goes against my ethos.

      Anyway… lets see.

You one thing the rules for online miney making could be different in different countries.

I wish that people in the know would be more open, but i guess thats how the make money.

Again thanks for you fab comment. You are star for managing life with your illness and sharing.

  5. I like this post and the questions you asked. Just like you, I have some of these questions in my thoughts for a long time now, but you’ve voiced them out. I will read the comments here to learn more as I am also clueless about most of them. I want to monetize my blog amongst other things and it hasn’t been a walk in the park.

I started blogging as a passion and hobby. But at this stage, I want more out of blogging. I want to earn from it and I want to learn all the other things associated with blogging and social media. And time has been a hindrance to acquiring the skill sets needed to up my blogging.

Thank you, Bella, for this post. 🙂

And then i dont want spoil my blog and what i share and loose that beauty of it because well i dont feel right to do that.

      Ohhh a headache

I hope this conversation gets those experienced in these matters to comment..

  6. Wish I could answer all of your questions, but the truth is I haven’t looked into any of them as I blog only for my own enjoyment. I work full-time, so I don’t post nearly as often as I’d like — but when I do, I spend between one and two hours writing and editing. I also haven’t given any thought to monetizing (because of sentences 1 and 2) but perhaps this article will help provide some more insights: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jaysondemers/2016/10/12/7-ways-to-monetize-your-blog-traffic/#3ad583b34a45

  7. Hi there! I’m super new to blogging. I really enjoy to write and that is why I decided to start. I just want to write to get out some thoughts. I’m wondering how to expand to get followers to be able to ask questions. Thank you for sharing this! I will love to come back to it if I ever get more into blogging. Being a full time student is a huge job in itself.

  8. I’ll give you my quick take to the ones I can answer. 🙂

What is your main blogging goal? To write as a hobbie, to make money, to do both, or just be creative?
I started it as a hobby and it’s grown over 4 years into my passion.
Is a mailing list necessary and why?
That greatly depends on why you blog. If you are trying to start a business of some sort, a brand, a platform, then it’s important because the members of your mailing list are the only group of followers that you have any control over connecting with. Algorithms can change at any point on any social media platform and even through search engines like google. So at any time, your followers could lose track of where you are. With a mailing list that can’t happen.
Why should you go self hosted? What is the reason, the benefit the need? But, if you are paying for your WordPress account do you need to be self hosted ? Why?
Again, it depends on why you’re blogging. Same answer as above partially and then the added benefit of creative control and if you ever want the option to monetize your work it’s available to you.
How many hours do you spend blogging? Do you have a day job? I do not have a day job currently and I spend most of my free time working in some way on my blog platform. (Which also correlates with your number 12 question)

9/10How many blog post do you write a day?
How many blog posts do you write a week?
I write a lot but I generally post a couple times a week.

    Hope this helps. ❤

        • I just looked into it and tried to set it up, and it has gdpr – they all have too have it as the fine is too high..

but adding it to my blog – well the happiness engineer got stuck.. thank god it wasnt me.

          mailchimp is not so easy
and may be i am rushing it

I am a kid with a new toy, once i start

        • I just way too much time on mailchimp winging it. I created a landing page after so many attempts. Which does go to spam, but the first mail out went to spam, and the wp engineers are stuck on why the pop up doesnt work…lol so much fun.. and i still dont know what to give to my mailing list..

I still ferl whats tge difference with a wp subscription and mailing list, both are provided by a company. And i know being on the receiving end of emails is not fun.. and then we ask them ti subcribe to the blig and email list it is double emails for them… i still feel something isnt right. Because wp offers so much and each time you blog it is an email list. It jyst seems like duplication for me and my readers…

          Liked by 1 person

      • We couldn’t get the pop up to work either. 😉

As for the duplicate emails….(mailing list and email sent to followers when you post a blog)…you are correct as long as you are on wordpress.com. I’ll lose that feature when I move to self-hosting so that’s why I wanted to set up a mailing list.

        Liked by 1 person

        • Thank you for clarifing that.

So when u where a wordpress did you have a paid account or free ?.

So have you spoken to wp about going self hosted and still being on wp as front end? I do believe it is a valid option.

You know the crazy thing is i have created a mail chimp account now…
          Anyway lets see.

May be it will be useful if i ever move.. i just dont know..

If on premium or business.. this the answer i got. Which is what is shared when you look at the plans bit of the site. But if the product is tangile it must be business , else premium.

          The response…from wp engineer.

That’s correct – you don’t need another hosting if you’re going to use either of the plans.

With WordPress.com you have hosting as well.

  10. The last time I read Word Press’ TOS, they do not allow blogs that sell services or products. Maybe that is why you are asking about the need to self-host because that is the recommendation if you want a website that sells products or services and that contains a blog. The Word Press program is free, but you will need a hosting company to host your blog and that comes with a price. That also means paying for domain name yearly. Unless you’re technical savvy, you might also need a web master.

  11. Copied from the plan section of wp, you will all have access to this.

Do I need another web host?

No. All WordPress.com sites include our specially tailored WordPress hosting to ensure your site stays available and secure at all times. You can even use your own domain when you upgrade to the Personal, Premium, or Business plan.

And you wp host for you. But if your goods are physical then it has to be a business plan then u use woocommerce. Others non tangile premium wp plan.

    • Xena I love talking to you because your research skills, logic and analysis are so great. you always make me think more logically.

I have been on this craziness all of yesterday did not go to bed unil 1am trying set up mail chimp – ahhh still haven’t done it

then we have a hot water issue,
but I have to go to work and leave mum with the plumber guy as I work part time, Monday Wednesday and Friday and I cant be working from home today,

so then I got up at 4am for meditation, and then I as on to wp support team at 5am – because it was driving me made it didn’t make sense at all..

and I feel like everyone we hear self hosted and we feel we have too..

but I always thought that advise is old, when wordpress.com was less developed as a product… and it make sense for wordpress expand their offering ..

      I feel so happier now.

now I have to figure out tax which I think might be easy ish as I have an accountant..

but legal business stuff, and what type of company and international tax … ahhh that might not be so easy… wish me luck

and mailchimp – well still learning

to be continued…… wip … but oh man I feel better.

      • Thanks for your kind words, but when it comes to Word Press, I can’t say that my research skills are always up-to-date. When I opened my first blog in August 2012, I extensively read many of their forums, what things meant on the admin side, and their TOS. I can’t count the changes that WP has made since then and most times do not know that changes have been made unless I encounter them.

Most times, they are excellent when contacting support chat. The forums generally take more time and are only beneficial when the situation effects other bloggers.

I’m happy they have given you the information you need and wish you the best in making decisions for a business blog. (((((Hugs)))))

        • Xena, when i do tooo toooo much research …. i get totally scared . I am only doing research, cause I have nothing to sell – so that is a small problem… and all that i am doing one of my baby steps that i have been doing on and off for two years, and then i go hot and cold, and back off and get a headache and confused.

but this baby step is a bit better than the ones before – because i gave it space, and i tried to tackle it like a project.

but – me and blogging as business – omg -way way way done stream if ever! i might if i do something is try to write a book or two – but again ahhhh baby steps and right now way to scared to go there.. but researching and then i will sit on it and see how i feel …

i do practise what i write on my blog – lol

anyway – would you be interested in me post a blog series of my findings

you are right , wp.com keep increasing offerings and they offer almost the full package. or may be the full package.

anyway sorry for the long comment.

    • Hi Pragalha, what a learning curve, learnt loads but not all questions are answered. yet.

when I started to blog I did so much research and got a headache about all of this stuff so I kinda left it.

I started on a free platform.

then I from the point of karma, I decide to pay for wordpress, because we get such good stuff that we don’t have to code ourself. I even tried the blogger platform and it was so much harder than wordpress, so I decided to pay for it, and I went for premium so I could hold more media as I share so may images and stuff.

then I saw wordpress adding more widget to sell stuff.

so it never made sense why do you have to go self hosted.

but now the most important question which might be the hardest to find out – and that is how to open a business, pay tax and be legal

      • Thank you so much for so generously sharing your explorations! I love the idea of creating more value through my blog with various of this upgrades and options. If I ever make money with my blog I would be absolutely gratified. But when I first started my blog I wasn’t aware of any of this, Writing came through heartfelt emotions and the connections here became my joy. So it feels very difficult for me to go through all the research and effort it would take to learn and avail of these options.
My wishes galore to you that you find valuable and easeful ways to progress with your work in new ways!

        • Hi Pragalha, actually i write this blog to share want is flowing through me.

This post is part of what i call fact finding, it may lead to nothing , or something. Right now it wont lead to anything because i cant think of anything and i have question that need answering.

I love my blog the way it is and i dont want to mess that up at all. I love my part time job as business analyst.

But i just want to do the research been meaning to do two years ago. Lol.

Nothing is decided and sometimes after fact finding no action is taken as it is not right.

So for now nothing new happening.

And i think the beauty of wordpress.com is every one is writing from the heart ..and it is about writing and community spirit.

Looking forward to reading your next post

Things do not have to take immediate effect but this fact finding could slowly and eventually lead you to things that become useful to you.
For some reason I am enjoying the ample apace I am giving between posts. I probably will do one today or tomorrow 🙂
